For many Hurricane Irma was a time of great loss, just the thought of that storm sparks anxiety in many but In September 2018, Hurricane Irma sparked a passion in Alyssa Barry. Although she has always had a soft spot for animals, it wasn't until she found some horses. Horses that been abandoned just down the street, sadly owners had left them behind and evacuated. horses kept coming, wondering onto Alyssa’s property, dragging the ropes they had been tied up with, still clipped to their halters, looking for food. Alyssa took them in and after the storm had passed , started this journey, A journey that would eventually blossom into not only a sanctuary for animals and a farm full of enrichment and creativity for our community.
After caring for the abandoned horses for several weeks, seeking medial attention for them and starting the tedious process of nursing them back to health, they were responding really well, thriving on the attention. She noticed that loved being around others especially children and their excited energy. She decided to open her heart and her barn doors to not only horses but all animals in need! Alyssa's Animal Sanctuary is now the happy home to chickens, ducks, goats, dogs and the horses of course. As you can imagine, bags of feed and supplements are pretty pricey so She hosts art and yoga classes, birthday parties and themed special events like Unicorn Tea Time to help out with the costs of caring for the family of animals. Check out more about this fantastic farm here and keep your eyes open for all of her adorable events and future Macaroni Events & Meetups.
